John 14:6
Jesus said to him, “I am
the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
Jesus does not take men and say, “This is
the truth, and if you don’t believe it you will be damned.” He simply shows us
the truth -- “I am the truth” -- and leaves us alone. We name His name, but is
He the truth to us in our bodily life, in our common sense life, in our intellectual
and emotional life? It takes a long while for us to see that Jesus Christ is
the truth.
Truths have no meaning to us until we get
into the domain of their power. “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is
born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” We want to get at truth by “shortcuts,”
the wonder is our LORD’s amazing patience. He never insists that we take His
way. He simply says, “I am the way.” We might as well learn to take His way at
the beginning, but we won’t; we are determined on our own way.
When a man is at his wit’s
end, it is not a cowardly thing to pray.
